What DIY really saves

Labor is roughly 50–60% of a basement budget. A capable owner doing framing, insulation, paint, trim, and flooring — while hiring licensed trades for electrical, plumbing, and HVAC (required in Utah) — can bring a $55,000 project to $30,000–35,000 in materials and trade labor. The savings are real.

What it really costs

• Time: 300–500 hours. Every-weekend-for-a-year is the honest schedule. The half-finished basement that stalls at 70% is so common it's a Utah cliché.
• The trades still cost. Electrical, plumbing, and mechanical work must be done by licensed contractors in Utah regardless of project size — that's $13,000–30,000 you can't DIY away.
